I have just a minute before we leave on our afternoon walk, but Lola and I would like to request prayer for the 1,000 MWDs in Iraq. For anyone that doesn’t know what MWDs are, they are the military working dogs and there are about 1,000 active working dogs for the US military in Iraq.
Please keep these very talented dogs in your daily prayers, as they continue the hard work in Iraq’s hot and windy weather.
I was reading a book , “Better Food For Dogs” by David Bastin, Jennifer Ashton and Dr. Grant Nixon, DVM. It is a terrific and thorough book on dog nutrition and canine cookbook. I came to a page listing toxic foods to dogs and I was surprised at several on the list.
Coffee and all coffee related products, tea, alcoholic beverages (not sure who would give their dogs alcoholic drinks?), hops (used in home beer brewing), tomato foliage (leaves and stems), rhubarb leaves, pits and seeds of plums, apricots, peaches, apples and some varieties of cherries, bitter almonds and of course, moldy/spoiled foods. They even mention the peels/sprouts/foliage of green potatoes.

It took me all afternoon but my Mom finally agreed to release my favorite low fat liver treat recipe. They are called Beef BOWnies. She use to sell them at her dog bakery but shipping was too unpredictable so she stopped. Now she only cooks them for my friends and past customers that are hooked on them.
My Mom tells me that these are great for diabetic and overweight fuzzy friends. They are very low in fat, high in needed iron but high in cholesterol too. Use caution about how often we get these. She suggest that these treats be given no more than once or twice per week, if in small bite-sized pieces.
These can be kept in the freezer because they spoil very easily.
- 1 ½ lbs. of USDA beef or chicken liver, pureed
- ½ C. whole wheat flour
- 1 C. white flour
- ¼ C. corn meal
- 1 C. grated parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cover cookie sheet with foil, coat with cooking spray, sprinkle lightly with corn meal and set aside.
My Mom is downstairs cooking up some fresh treats for my sister, Lola and I. So….I decided to hop onto her computer and introduce myself.
I am 12 years old and pretty much the top senior in our household. My sister is only 4 years old and you can figure - that I try my best to teach her all the BAD habits that I can get away with. I was born in Wisconsin and some how I ended up on the streets at about 8 years of age. Then the Basset Buddies Rescue group found me and arranged a foster home. My Mom and Dad came to adopt Sam (a 14 year old Basset) and I turned on the charm. I wanted to go home with them and have a forever home and that is exactly what happened. My life changed so much but it was for the good. My Mom and Dad took Sam and I everywhere. We got home cooked meals and fresh organic treats. My Mom stayed home and would take us for long walks or to the dog park to visit our friends. Then Sam got really sick and he didn’t want to go outside with me anymore. My Mom got really nervous and spent a lot of time with Sam. One day, my Mom and Dad took Sam to see Dr. Mitchell and I didn’t see him again. I cried a lot and looked for him all over the house. I actually thought he was playing hiding-go-seek but I couldn’t find him. My Mom thought that I could use a friend and she brought home Taylor. Taylor told me that he witnessed his original Dad commit suicide in their home and then his entire life changed. He was really sad and didn’t want much to do with people. My Mom was determined to help Taylor learn to trust and she worked with him for months. He did adjust and learned to ask me for my opinion. Of course, I was always willing to get my 2 cents! Taylor became very sick and I had to say good-bye to him. Now, I was starting to get a little worried because I couldn’t seem to keep my friends around. My Mom reassured me that it wasn’t me but that they needed to go over The Rainbow Bridge and not be sick anymore.
About 2 years ago, my Mom and Dad found out that I was diabetic. What a shock that was for all of us! She learned a lot about canine diabetics and now she cooks my meals and organic treats. I lost some of my back teeth and it is difficult for me to chew those store bought treats so my Mom makes the treats softer and with no preservatives. I love them!
Lola came to leave with us just before we relocated to San Antonio, TX from Minneapolis, MN in January 2008. Lola wasn’t allowed to run free and roam the outside in her original home. My Mom told me about Lola and we decided to invite her to live with us. I’m glad we did but sometimes she teases me. Like yesterday, she laided on the top step and wouldn’t let me come up the stairs. My Mom was in her office and I wanted to be under her desk. Why did Lola do that? I think she just wanted to tease me. She knows I run this house and she shouldn’t do that.
I have to go now. I can hear my Mom coming up the stairs to her office. Bye.
