Raspberries are known to assist in blood sugar regulation in humans and as I was researching a new diabetic friendly dog treat for The Gourmet Dog Bakery, I realized that raspberries are toxic to dogs. Not only are raspberries toxic …. but strawberries, blueberries, boysenberries and corn cobs. The corn cobs were a surprise because we have given our dogs fresh cooked corn-on-the-cob in our MN fall season.
Xylitol is toxic to dogs and is common in chewing gum. With the explosion of sugar substitutes in human food, xylitol is the sugar substitute of choice. Xylitol is widely distributed throughout nature in small amounts. Some of the best sources are fruits, berries, mushrooms, lettuce, hardwoods, and corn cobs. One cup of raspberries contains less than one gram of xylitol.
Please be cautious in reading the ingredient labels, as you give your furry children treats.
